Society Of Biblical Literacy Dinner + Discussion

  • Trinity Church Denver 1340 Sherman Street Denver, CO, 80203 (map)

Trinity is hosting this evening event for The Society of Biblical Literature conference.  Theological conservatives feel like outsiders, so dinners like these constitutes an important event particularly for younger scholars and graduate students to network and understand that others share their gospel commitments.

The Society of Biblical Literature meeting occurs annually in a major American city in coordination with the American Academy of Religion. Most scholars who present research at the SBL meeting don’t hold to the beliefs of the historic faith, in fact they tend to presume that the biblical narrative is myth and that scriptural ethics have harmed Western civilization and endorsed abusive colonial enterprises. In 2005, a group of evangelical scholars who study ancient manuscripts founded a blog to respond to what they believed to be intellectually-indefensible deconstructions of the Bible. Over the next decade, an annual dinner emerged as a key venue for evangelical scholars interested in ancient languages and material culture to eat, pray and laugh together in the shadow of a larger event which many consider hostile to the traditional faith. Probably, a quarter of the attendees do not adhere to the historic faith; anybody is welcome, but everyone anticipates a gospel ethos.

Tickets cover dinner and discussion and will be available closer to the event (approx. $20pp).
